Is it possible to learn Chinese on your own?

This thought occurs to many who want to learn the language of the Middle Kingdom. And it seems logical, given the abundance of apps, lessons, and self-study guides. Advancing beyond "nihao" seems entirely within reach.

The first few days are truly enthusiastic: learning greetings, trying out the Latin transcription, and enjoying the first words.

And then it all turns into a jumbled mess. What should I learn next? Why do Chinese people speak completely differently than in the app? How can I even remember these characters? As a result, they quit before they even really start.

The main question isn't "Is it possible to learn Chinese on your own?" but "What level can you realistically reach on your own—and how long will it take?"

Let's figure that out.

Is it possible to learn Chinese without a teacher?

Yes, you can develop a certain foundation on your own. For example:

  • learn simple phrases;
  • learn to count;
  • master easy words;
  • become familiar with pronunciation.

If you're disciplined and study regularly, you can actually do it. But Chinese is very different from the languages most of us are accustomed to. Therefore, self-study poses several serious challenges.

The Main Problem

Beginners often don't understand how the language works.

Because of this, learning becomes a series of random actions: today an app, tomorrow a video, the day after tomorrow a list of Chinese characters, a week later a different course. There's no system.

A person can "learn Chinese" for months, but still be unable to say even a simple phrase. Not to mention understanding a native speaker or maintaining a conversation.

Why don't apps provide the full result?

Because knowing a language means:

  • communicating;
  • listening;
  • reacting;
  • understanding context;
  • speaking.

Without proper practice, the brain cannot "feel" the language.

自学
zì xué — "teach yourself." It only works when combined with real practice.

What really helps learn Chinese?

  1. Regularity. We can already see some eye rolls at this point. But it's really better to study 20-30 minutes every day than once a week for three hours. Language thrives on constant contact.
  2. Conversational practice. Even the simplest dialogues help you get used to the language faster. Once you start using words in speech, they're much easier to remember.
  3. Correct pronunciation from the start. In Chinese, this is crucial. The word mā can mean "mother," mǎ can mean "horse," and mà can be a swear word, depending on the tone. If you pronounce it incorrectly for a long time, it's much more difficult to relearn. Therefore, feedback from the teacher is very helpful at the start.
  4. A clear structure. When a person understands what they are learning, why, and in what order, learning becomes much calmer and more effective.

Can a child learn Chinese on their own?

If we are talking about small children, no.

A child needs to be engaged, supported, and motivated. And independent study quickly becomes boring. Especially if the lessons are simply rote memorization of symbols.

Whereas modern lessons with a teacher include games, dialogues, and tasks appropriate for the child's age. In such an environment, children begin to perceive Chinese not as something incomprehensible, but as an interesting process.

Why does a teacher help you learn faster?

Independent learning often drags on for years because a person constantly makes mistakes, doubts, and jumps between topics.

A teacher helps avoid these vacillations: they establish a system, explain difficult points, and support you when you feel like giving up.

Is it possible to combine independent learning and lessons?

Yes, and this is one of the best options. For example, in classes, you receive a system and practice, and you reinforce the material yourself: listening to music, watching videos, reading.

How long does it take to learn Chinese?

It depends on your goal. A basic conversational level usually requires several months of regular practice. But language is a long-term project. It's impossible to "complete" it.

But you can definitely reach a point where an interesting turning point occurs. The language was foreign, but now you understand native speakers, recognize characters, and distinguish tones. It's at this point that learning truly becomes enjoyable.

Summary

You can learn Chinese on your own—at a basic level. However, the main difficulty is usually not the language itself, but the lack of a system, practice, and support.

Therefore, the best option is to combine independent practice with classes, which offer a clear structure, live communication, and feedback.
